The Great Awakening: What It Means for Human Consciousness

What if humanity is only beginning to discover what consciousness is capable of?

What if the changes many people feel within themselves, in awareness, perception and understanding, are part of something much bigger?

These questions have grown increasingly central to my life, shaped by my own experience of profound personal and spiritual transformation.

I believe we may be living through the early stages of what many traditions and contemporary thinkers describe as a Great Awakening.

Not one dramatic event that changes the world overnight, but something that unfolds gradually, through individuals, communities and generations.

An awakening that comes in layers.

And I believe understanding this possibility could become one of the most important conversations of our time.

A Note on the Name

The phrase "Great Awakening" also refers to specific periods of religious revival in history, and it is widely used today within certain Christian movements.

That is not what I mean here.

When I speak of a Great Awakening, I am describing something broader and more open: a gradual shift in how humanity understands consciousness, awareness and inner experience. It is not tied to any single religion, and it does not ask anyone to adopt a particular belief.

My Own Journey Into Consciousness

My interest in transformation did not begin with spirituality.

For much of my professional life, I worked in organisational transformation, helping people and organisations navigate change, recognise new possibilities and move towards different ways of operating.

Transformation has been a recurring theme throughout my adult life.

But my understanding of it shifted profoundly through my own Kundalini awakening, an experience that unfolded over many years.

It opened questions about consciousness, energy, perception, identity and the nature of human experience that I had never considered in quite the same way.

I began exploring ideas that reach beyond conventional personal development:

  • What is consciousness?

  • Why do some people experience such profound changes in awareness?

  • What happens when our understanding of ourselves and the world begins to move?

  • And perhaps most importantly, what becomes possible when we begin to experience life differently?

These questions are now at the heart of my work.

What Is the Great Awakening?

The idea of a collective awakening appears in different forms across spiritual traditions, philosophy and contemporary discussions about consciousness.

Some describe it as a movement towards greater self-awareness. Others see it as an evolution in human consciousness, involving deeper interconnectedness, expanded perception, or a change in how humanity understands its place in the world.

There is no single agreed definition, and the existence of a worldwide spiritual awakening is not scientifically established.

For me, the Great Awakening is a possibility worth exploring with genuine curiosity.

I see it as a gradual process through which more people may begin questioning inherited beliefs, examining their inner experience, and exploring different ways of understanding themselves and the world.

Not everyone will experience it the same way.

Some may undergo profound spiritual experiences. Others may discover new perspectives through meditation, reflection, creativity, relationships or significant life changes.

And many may never use the word awakening at all.

Awakening May Happen in Layers

One of the ideas I find most compelling is that transformation rarely happens all at once.

Even within an individual, profound change can unfold over many years.

There may be periods of questioning, discovery, expanded awareness, integration and renewed understanding.

What initially looks like the destination may turn out to be the beginning of another stage.

My own experience has encouraged me to consider that collective transformation might unfold gradually too.

Perhaps different people and communities explore different aspects of consciousness at different times. Perhaps understanding develops as knowledge, personal experience and cultural conversation evolve.

Rather than imagining a single moment when humanity suddenly "wakes up," I am interested in a much longer process of discovery.

A process that may take decades or generations.

Kundalini Awakening and Human Potential

Kundalini awakening is one of the areas I am most passionate about exploring.

Within yogic and tantric traditions, Kundalini is described as a latent energy associated with the possibility of profound transformation.

People who identify as having experienced Kundalini awakening report a wide range of experiences, sometimes involving changes in bodily sensation, perception, emotional awareness, identity and spiritual understanding.

For some, these experiences become a catalyst for exploring consciousness in ways they never imagined.

My own Kundalini journey has been deeply significant in shaping how I understand transformation.

It has also led me to the work of others who investigate Kundalini and expanded human awareness. Writers such as Neven Paar offer detailed spiritual interpretations of Kundalini development, including concepts of energetic growth and heightened awareness.

I find these perspectives fascinating, while recognising that many of their metaphysical explanations sit outside established scientific understanding.

For me, the value lies in staying curious, holding different perspectives lightly, and continuing to learn.

What If Awakening Is Just the Beginning?

Much of the conversation around spiritual awakening focuses on the experience itself.

But I am increasingly interested in what comes afterwards.

What happens when someone begins living with a different understanding of themselves?

How might greater self-awareness shape their relationships, creativity, decisions and sense of purpose?

Could changes in individual awareness ripple into the communities and organisations people belong to?

And how might our collective understanding of consciousness develop over the coming decades?

These are the questions that excite me.

Because transformation is not only about leaving something behind.

It can also be about discovering something new: new perspectives, new possibilities, new ways of relating to ourselves, one another and the world.

Why I Created The Human Shift

The Human Shift is my way of bringing together the different dimensions of transformation that have shaped my life:

  • My professional experience of organisational change.

  • My own personal experiences of transformation.

  • My Kundalini awakening.

  • And a growing interest in the nature and potential of human consciousness.

I want to explore these subjects openly, thoughtfully and with curiosity.

Initially, much of what I share will come from my own experiences, reflections and research. Over time, I hope The Human Shift grows into something broader: a collection of knowledge, practical resources, conversations and educational material that helps people understand and navigate profound change.

I do not believe everyone needs to share the same spiritual beliefs or experiences.

There is room for different perspectives, different questions and different ways of understanding consciousness.

What matters to me is creating a space where these conversations can develop.

The Next Chapter of Human Transformation

I believe we are at an interesting point in the human story.

Technology is changing how we communicate, learn and understand the world. Scientific research continues to investigate consciousness, even as fundamental questions about subjective experience remain open.

At the same time, spiritual traditions and individual experiences offer other perspectives on awareness and human possibility.

I am particularly interested in what might emerge when these different fields speak to each other.

Not because I believe we already have all the answers, but because I believe there is still so much to discover.

If humanity is entering a period of profound change in how we understand consciousness, I want to contribute to that exploration.

And if the shift unfolds slowly, over many years, that makes the work no less meaningful.

Perhaps the Great Awakening is not a single event we are waiting for, but an ongoing invitation to become more conscious of how we live, what we believe, and what we may yet become.

That is the journey I want to explore through The Human Shift.

And I invite you to explore it with me.
