THE MENOPAUSE SHIFT
More than a hormonal change, a whole-life transition
More than a hormonal change
Menopause is a biological transition. But for many women, the experience reaches far beyond the physical. It can coincide with profound changes in identity, relationships, sexuality, confidence, boundaries, work, creativity, purpose and the way we understand ourselves. Sometimes the woman emerging at this stage of life no longer fits comfortably inside the life the younger version of her created. That doesn't necessarily mean something has gone wrong. Something may be changing. I call this The Menopause Shift.
Safety. Creation. Agency. Love. Truth. Discernment. Meaning.
The traditional chakra system offers one framework for exploring those questions. You don't need to believe in chakras to use this model. Think of the seven energy centres as seven dimensions of human experience: Safety. Creation. Agency. Love. Truth. Discernment. Meaning. This is a spiritual and reflective framework, not a medical explanation for menopause. Hormonal and physiological changes are real and medically established, and symptoms or health concerns should always be discussed with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. But the hormones aren't necessarily the whole story of a woman's experience.
Safety & Belonging
The root chakra is traditionally associated with grounding, safety, home, survival and belonging. For years, you may have built security by holding everything together: children, relationships, work, finances, family and home. Then something begins to change. What once felt secure may start to feel restrictive. Or you may realise that the safety you created for everybody else never fully included you. The questions become: Where do I genuinely feel safe? What am I carrying because I believe everything will fall apart if I put it down? Where have I confused responsibility with belonging? What would a grounded life look like now? The shift: From 'I must hold everything together' toward 'I can create a life that holds me too.'
Creation, Desire & Life Force
The sacral chakra is associated with creativity, pleasure, sexuality, emotion and desire. During the reproductive years, enormous physical and emotional energy can be directed toward creating and nurturing life. Menopause changes the reproductive body. It does not end creativity. The question may become less about what your body can reproduce and more about what your life wants to create. Ask yourself: What do I desire when nobody else is answering the question? What makes me feel alive? What wants to be created through me now? What have I postponed? The shift: From 'Create and nurture for others' toward 'Create from the deepest expression of myself.'
Power & Agency
The solar plexus is associated with personal power, confidence, action and agency. Midlife can expose how many decisions have been shaped by approval, obligation, fear or the desire to keep everyone happy. The invitation isn't necessarily to become harder. It is to become more conscious of where your authority lives. Ask: Where am I saying yes when I mean no? Whose approval am I still trying to earn? Where have I made myself smaller to preserve a relationship or role? What would I choose if I trusted myself? The shift: From 'Tell me who I need to be' toward 'I choose how I live.'
Love Without Self-Abandonment
The heart centre is associated with love, compassion, connection and grief. Many women become extraordinarily skilled at caring. But caring can gradually become self-abandonment. You rescue. You accommodate. You forgive. You understand everybody else's perspective. At some point, another question can emerge: Where did love become self-abandonment? Where am I carrying emotional responsibility that belongs to somebody else? Can I love someone and still say no? Can I remain compassionate without abandoning myself? The shift: From 'Love means giving myself away' toward 'Love includes me.'
Voice & Truth
The throat chakra represents communication, expression and truth. For years, you may have swallowed words to maintain harmony: I'm fine. It doesn't matter. Don't worry about me. Eventually, those sentences may stop working because your relationship with your own truth is changing. Ask yourself: What have I never said? What conversation am I avoiding? Where do I silence myself to keep the peace? What would I say if I wasn't afraid of somebody else's reaction? The shift: From 'Keep the peace' toward 'Speak clearly and remain connected to myself.'
Discernment & Inner Knowing
The third eye is traditionally associated with perception, intuition and discernment. Earlier in life, external validation can carry enormous weight: What will people think? Am I making the right decision? Should I ask somebody else? With maturity comes another possibility: learning to listen inwardly while also distinguishing intuition from fear, conditioning, wishful thinking and other people's expectations. Ask: What do I already know? What does my experience tell me? Where am I seeking permission for something I have already decided? What is intuition, and what might simply be fear? The shift: From 'Tell me what is true' toward 'I can listen inwardly while remaining discerning.'
Meaning & Becoming
The crown chakra is associated with meaning, consciousness and connection to something larger than the individual self. Midlife can produce an enormous existential question: Who am I when the old roles no longer define me? Mother. Partner. Employee. Caregiver. Achiever. Peacemaker. Provider. These identities may remain part of you, but they may no longer be enough to explain you. Ask: Who am I becoming? What matters to me now? What part of my old identity has completed its purpose? What do I want the next decades of my life to stand for? The shift: From 'Who have I been expected to be?' toward 'Who am I choosing to become?'
Root — Where do I feel safe? Sacral — What am I creating now? Solar Plexus — Where does my power live? Heart — Does my love include me? Throat — What needs to be said? Third Eye — What do I already know? Crown — Who am I becoming?
Menopause can arrive during a period when many of these questions are being renegotiated simultaneously. That may be one reason the experience can feel so much larger than a collection of physical symptoms. Your body is changing. But perhaps parts of your life, identity and understanding of yourself are changing too. The goal isn't necessarily to get back to the woman you were before menopause. Perhaps the deeper question is: Who are you becoming now?
A reorientation. A Human Shift.
Menopause does not have to be understood only as an ending. It can also be a period of questioning, reorientation and profound personal change. Not an ending. A reorientation. A Human Shift.

This transition is yours to understand. A session helps you sit with these questions and make sense of where you are. You leave with a clearer sense of your next step.
